Welcome to Madrid

The Teatro de la Zarzuela, declared a Site of General Interest in the Monument category in 1994, is the first and only theatre of Spanish lyrical. Located in the heart of the centre, behind the Courts, it has always promoted the music of the Spanish lyrical genre and the best pieces from the repertoire are still sung and heard today.

The theatre has had a long history of events since its inauguration in 1856. The most famous Spanish operettas were premiered here. In 1909 a fire destroyed the entire building, opening again in 1913. After the Civil War it went into decline until in 1956 (exactly a century after its inauguration), it was acquired by the General Society of Authors. It is currently owned by the Ministry of Culture.

It has 1,218 seats.
