The Philip II Train

El Tren de Felipe II

Embark on this wonderful 50-minute ride to one of the most stunning and historically valuable sites in the Region of Madrid: El Escorial Monastery and the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, the site lies just 60km northwest of the city of Madrid, at the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. Located in a wonderful natural setting, the magnificent monastery built by King Philip II reflects both the king’s austere nature and the strength of his religious devotion.

You can get to El Escorial by car or public transport, but one of the most enjoyable ways of travelling there is on the Tren de Felipe II, a vintage train whose carriages and locomotive date back to the 1940s and 1960s, respectively, on board you'll be joined by conductors in period costumes who will make you feel like you're in ‘the empire on which the sun never sets’.

Once you get to El Escorial you can visit the Monastery – a masterpiece of Herrerian architecture – and other landmarks such as the Casas de Oficios (Trade Houses), the Casita del Príncipe (Residence of the Prince), the Casa de Infantes (Infants’ House) and the Coliseo de Carlos III Teatro Real. Take a stroll around the town and be dazzled by the architectural splendour of that era.
