    Information

Located in what is known as the Huerto del Francés or the French Garden, so called because it housed the Napoleonic troops during the War of Independence (1808-1814), this water wheel was one of many discovered in El Retiro Park, used to supply water to the gardens, ponds and streams, and to the Royal Porcelain Factory, located on the site now occupied by the sculpture of the Fallen Angel.

The water wheel, which dates back to the 17th century during the construction of the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro, was discovered during archaeological digs carried out between 1996 and 2000, in addition to a well, a reservoir, a settling pool and a drainage well, the remains of another well, another pool, and accessories. Its gigantic wheels have been restored, in addition to the walls, the pool and other civil engineering elements that have been replaced according to its original design.

Since its restoration, the water wheel has been set up to run continuously so that visitors can enjoy the spectacle of this unique and original piece that is part of the city's history.
