Santander Park (Parque del Tercer Depósito)

    Information

It is partially closed due to works, which are scheduled to be completed by 2023. The running track has been cordoned off, although the children’s play areas, catering spaces and five entrances to the park are still open. Two gates are also being kept, which lead to the football and padel areas, parallel to Avenida de Pablo Iglesias.

Constructed upon a reservoir of the Canal of Isabel II (its official name is Centre for Leisure and Sport Third Reservoir), Santander Park was inaugurated in 2007 in Chamberí. It includes a sports complex and several gardens and children’s play areas. When the remodelling works are completed, it will span over 116,000 square metres, with extensive green spaces and sports areas.

The plants have been specially selected to minimize water use and it has a biohealth circuit, areas for playing boules and an area for playing chess, as well as recreation areas including one with a pond and spout fountains. Eight paddle tennis courts, a football pitch for 11 and another football pitch for 7 with artificial grass, a tartan running track (1.2 kilometers that cover the perimeter of the facilities) are all included (note that the use of bicycles is not allowed for people over 12 years of age). The facility also has a café/restaurant, bathrooms and several fountains.

In April 2021, the park’s remodelling work began, including the demolition of the golf course.  Once the works are completed, the Tercer Depósito Park will have more than 55,000 square metres of green spaces, 800 trees and 100 bushes. There will also be basketball and volleyball courts and a hockey pitch.  It will also have a physical activity area (bio-healthy circuit), a calisthenics park and courts to play petanca.
